Over-The-Air Update Feature

Before you proceed, check the server status to make sure it is ready to accept calls.

This feature lets you update your Mik-Box firmware  by using your cell-phone while it is connected to the car.

Once you initiate the firmware update sequence there is no way back. The unit will try to dial into the update server, until it has finally downloaded the new firmware file. Once the new firmware is installed, you can only access the firmware update feature of that new firmware, if it works correctly on your system. If it does not, the only way to recover is to physically hook up a laptop to your car to do the update, or to send the mikbox unit back to me.

Read the following steps carefully.

1. Unplug phone

2. Turn on head unit

3. Plug in the phone

4. Go to the TEL screen and wait until the initialization is done (you have access to the phone book)

5. Use the numeric keypad to dial *TESTDIALUP#, then push the SND button. The mikbox will go into a simulated update mode. This is necessary to make sure that your phone supports data calls. In case it does, it will connect, and stay connected. You can end the call after 30 seconds,  unplug the phone, plug it back in, and then wait again until it is fully initialized.

If the phone disconnects after a split second, or just a few seconds, try everything again from step one. If this continues to happen, chances are your carrier has data calls disabled for your account. Contact your carrier and tell them to enable data calls. If they don't understand what you mean, tell them you want to use your cell phone as a modem, and connect it to a laptop via a serial cable.

5. If everything has worked so far, you are ready for the update. Drive your car into an area where you have maximum signal strength. That lowers the risk of losing the connection during the download, and usually gives you a better connection speed.

6. Dial *GETUPDATE# on your keypad, and push the SND button.

7. After a few seconds the phone should start dialing a number. If it does not dial, follow the same procedure as if the transfer was aborted (see step 8). If the dialing interrupts after a few seconds, and it continues redialing in an infinite loop, you still have a problem placing data calls. Unfortunately at this point you cannot go back, since the old firmware has been erased. Your only two options now are sending returning the mikbox unit for a flashudate, or trying to hook up a different phone to do so. My experiences have been that Verizon Motorola phones work the best.

8. The phone should connect and start downloading the firmware. If it is unable to connect, it will retry. If the connection times out or the data transfer gets aborted for any reason, the phone will always retry. If it does not retry, unplug it, and plug it back in. If the phone does not do anything anymore, give it 6 minutes to retry. Since the mikbox is now in flashupdate mode, it will not sync up to the head unit anymore unless the data transfer is completed successfully. Should it still sync up to the head unit anyways, something went wrong, so start over at step 1. If it does not sync up to the head unit, or dial either, the mikbox needs to be reset (unplug it from the car and plug it back in, or disconnect and reconnect the car battery (+). If it still does not dial or sync to the head unit, contact me, because something went seriously wrong, or the unit is damaged.

9. After the download is completed (could take anything between 2 and 15 minutes, depending on the connection quality), the mikbox will reset and should automatically sync back up with the head unit, depending on the phone model that is used. Some phones start power cycling at this point. If this happens, turn off the head unit, close the flip of the phone, disconnect the phone, make sure the phone is powered on, turn on the head unit, wait about 30 seconds, then connect the phone (leave flip closed). If it still doesn't sync up, you have a problem with the new firmware version, so contact me.
